City airport records 54% rise in intn’l cargo biz
Introduction of bonded trucking facility for perishables, along with intensive marketing activities, has helped the city airport register a 54.2% growth in international cargo and 20% jump in domestic freight in the first nine months of the current fiscal.
For the past one-and-a-half years, the cargo department has been trying to increase its clientele, list of products, services and volume by improving facilities and ensuring ease of doing business.
As per the data available on the website of Airport Authority of India, the city airport had moved 8,214 tonnes of domestic freight during April-December 2018, up from 6,820 tonnes in the comparable period previous year. International freight, meanwhile, skyrocketed to 6,820 tonnes from 1,635 tonnes.
The business volume has gone up by 60-100 tonnes a month now, said a cargo department official. He said there was an overall increase in the number of industries opting to fly their products as it’s faster. We have been getting in touch with industrial associations and old clients to find out what they require to start using cargo services. By creating awareness about the facilities and options we provide and costs for the same, we have succeeded in luring clients, who hitherto had never considered exporting their cargo by directly booking with us. They earlier preferred shipping or couriers, or approached agents, who booked the goods directly to Chennai.
